Wellcome Sanger Institute
Job Reference 83494 Senior Staff Scientist – CRISPR screening and cellular modelling
Salary range; £44,159 to £53,432 per annum, plus benefits
Part time and flexible applications considered equally with full time.
We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated senior staff scientist to lead in the development of cutting-edge techniques for high throughput genetic screening and cellular phenotyping. You will work in the Cellular Operations division as part of the research and development team led by Dr Andrew Bassett, and be involved in shaping the scientific direction of this group.
The development of genome editing technologies such as CRISPR/Cas9 has allowed us to accurately model the genetic basis of many human diseases and enabled genome-wide genetic screens in human cellular systems. The Wellcome Sanger Institute has an exceptional background in human disease genetics, high throughput CRISPR screening and single cell biology. In close collaboration with other groups at the institute you will develop novel cutting-edge CRISPR screening techniques such as saturation mutagenesis, base editing, dual guide libraries and CRISPRa/i and couple these to complex phenotypic readouts such as single cell transcriptomics, spatial genomics or phenotypic assays of cellular function. You will also be involved in developing human cellular systems (e.g. hematopoietic stem cells), and differentiation protocols of iPSCs in both 2D and 3D (e.g. cortical organoids) to better model human disease states in vitro. The systems developed will be applied to probe the genetic basis of cellular function in health and disease and understand the underlying cell biology.
The cellular research and development team is interested in the development of genome editing techniques, cellular differentiation and cellular phenotyping systems, especially with respect to high-throughput investigation of gene and non-coding regulatory element function. The Wellcome Sanger Institute offers a world-class academic environment, access to cutting edge sequencing facilities and extensive expertise in genome analysis and human genetics.
