Due to significant growth across our Power Solutions business, Wood are seeking additional HV Cable Engineering resources to support our growing workload. We are currently recruiting for a Cable System Design Engineer.

The Cable System Design Engineer opportunity will suit someone looking for the opportunity to develop a rewarding career in the electrical transmission industry. It is expected to grow alongside the needs of the network and planned development towards 2030 and then the 2050 reconfiguration of the UK network. It will provide the solid fundamental understanding of HV cable design supporting construction, procurement, and consultancy on a variety of projects and will support professional development and recognition within the sector.

The role can be based in any of our offices in Horsham, Glasgow or Darlington with Wood’s commitment to hybrid working allowing a combination between office and home working. You will be required to travel as and when required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager Cables, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Producing design outputs assigned, delivered against the allocated programme and budget and to the expected quality.
• Producing UGC systems design studies under guidance to support construction and consultancy projects including:

– Cable System Design Summary reports

– Cable Rating reports

– Cable Bonding scheme and Induced Voltage calculations

– Cable Forces calculations in different installations and operation scenarios

– Cable Sizing calculations

– Cable Pulling design and calculations

– Cable Installation Design and review of drawings

• Selecting materials and accessories and produce the Bill of Quantities for the project and tenders.
• Coordination with suppliers, review of products designs and type test certificates, and support Procurement team for technical aspects.
• Interfacing with other Wood teams (such as OHL, Substations and Protection teams) and different parties on the project.
• Supporting Operations team during construction period.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor Engineering Degree in STEM subject preferably with Electrical Engineering content.

Essential Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

• Consolidated understanding of HV Cable Design acquired from within the industry.
• Awareness of key health and safety impacts on OHL construction contracts.
• Ability to use and learn design software.
• Fluent spoken and written English language.
• Ability to work effectively in a diverse team.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

• Experience in working under CDM regulations as a designer.
• Ability of use CAD design software.
• Ability to create PLS CADD Models.
• Programming skills using Python and/or other languages.
• Ability to drive is beneficial.
