Cinema Programmer
Grade 5, 29,459 – 32,765 (inclusive of local weighting) depending on experience. Part Time, 22.5 hours over 3 days pw. Permanent. Based in Hertford Theatre. Closing date is Friday 26th January 2024 at midnight.
About the role
A rare opportunity for an experienced Cinema Programmer has become available to work at Hertford Theatre as part of the new team relaunching the building after a 4-year hiatus and a 24m redevelopment. This is an exciting time for you to join us and develop your career as we seek to strengthen and deepen the programme of theatre, live events, films and community work in our 550-seat theatre, 150-seat studio theatre, dance studio, community room and 3 dedicated cinemas.
Hertford Theatre are looking for someone to join them who is committed to excellence in their work. The successful candidate will work alongside the Creative Programmer to grow new audiences through a broad programme of film to ensure the cultural and commercial success of the programme is in line with the business plan.
Some of the key responsibilities include:
– To liaise with the Creative Programmer and our external cinema programmer (currently Picturehouses) to assemble the programme of compelling films for all our audiences.
– To liaise with our live and encore broadcast partners to ensure a programme of live broadcast content forms part of our programme.
– To liaise with our external advertising partners (currently DCM) to ensure the relevant advertising programme is scheduled as agreed.
– To assemble and schedule all films, adverts and trailers for delivery across the 3 full-time cinema screens and 2 part-time screens.
– Monitor the cinema box office returns and associated data capture for reporting and invoicing purposes.
– Ensure the marketing team have access to the film programme and associated trailers and information.
– Engage with new technologies and software packages in the delivery of recorded and live cinema programmes.
– In conjunction with Creative Programme Manager, Technical and Production Manager and Hospitality and Operations Manager, implement a programme of cinema key management and monitoring.
– To act as an ambassador for Hertford Theatre, its values and mission.
About you
This role will suit an ambitious Cinema Programmer keen to make their mark on a significant, new arts building in Hertfordshire. If you are an enthusiastic team player with a capacity to work independently where necessary, have an eye for detail and a love of film then this role is for you.
The ideal candidate will have:
– Experience of working with a range of IT software packages ideally in the delivery of film presentations, social media, or related video broadcast.
– Experience of liaising with film distributors, external media providers and advertising organisations or similar in the assembly of recorded media programmes for public screening.
– Experience of working in a creative and/or technical team in a multi-functional culture, arts venue, cinema, or theatre.
– Experience of working with non-professional and community organisations.
– Familiarity with promotional and presentational IT hardware and software tools.
– Familiarity with box office reporting tools is desirable although training will be given.
– An understanding of the principles of audience development through film programming.
– A passion for cinema, film and live broadcasts.
– An interest in IT and computer technologies.
– Comfortable and familiar with the use of administrative software e.g. Word, Windows 365, Teams, Zoom etc.
– Whilst there is some opportunity for blended working you will want to be in and around the building when you can, engaging with the team, the audiences and building creative networks both locally and regionally.
