Description The Head of Family & Matrimonial is responsible for leading the firm’s Family team, working with a range of clients including high-net-worth individuals.

The team is recognised as one of the leading family law practices in the Midlands, consistently recommended by leading directories such as The Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners.

The team provide advice on a wide range of family law issues from divorce , finances and child arrangements , to cohabitation and pre and postnuptial agreements and regularly act on high-net-worth client cases involving international elements

The role is responsible for managing a caseload of complex fee-earning matters whilst growing and developing the wider team.

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive.
Key Responsibilities

• Manage a varied caseload of complex matters that will include:

1. Drafting, negotiating, and advising on pre and post-marital agreements.
2. Matrimonial finance.
3. Shareholding issues and pension disputes.
4. Private law children disputes.

• Provide ongoing technical support on matters for more junior fee-earners.
• Ensure personal legal knowledge is kept up to date and new advancements are communicated to the wider team.

• Setting and presenting annual strategic plan for the Family team – work closely with the CEO and COO to construct team targets in relation to fees, time recording and business development.
• Assist with annual budget review process.
• Hold a monthly departmental meeting to report on team performance – follow up with one-to-ones as and when required.
• Attend quarterly HOD meetings to represent the Family team.
• Attend monthly one-to-ones with the CEO and COO – report on departmental priorities and financial performance.
• Provide supervision of matters for more junior fee-earners, and sign off work as and when required.
• Oversee the Personal Development Plans for each team member, ensure individual goals are met throughout the year through mentoring and technical guidance.
• Ensure appropriate allocation of fee-earning matters within the team – regularly assess capacity of fee-earners and delegate work effectively.
• Proactively drive performance of the team – achieve continued financial growth YOY.
• Assist with the recruitment process for department vacancies – including proactive headhunting and drafting job specifications/adverts.
• Conduct interviews with the HR Manager for all candidates.

• Work alongside the Business Development team to ensure there is a cohesive and proactive strategy to managing current and prospective clients.
• Take an active lead in managing the client experience.
• Build own profile in the market, along with those of more junior team members.
• Report regularly on business development figures to senior management.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

• Be at Partner or Head of Department level currently.
• Have extensive experience in a breadth of family and matrimonial matters.
• Be highly motivated and able to add value to the role.
• Have experience in supervising work and be able to effectively delegate to team members.
• Be able to evidence billing figures that meet or exceed existing targets.
• Have a keen interest in leadership and business development.
