Level 6 Applied Professional Engineering Programme (APEP) Degree Apprenticeship
Our Level 6 Applied Professional Engineering Programme Degree Apprenticeship is aimed at those with a passion for learning and innovation.
We’re reimagining the future of automotive, refining the quality of our combustion engines and expanding into electrification. As an Applied Professional Engineering Degree Apprentice, you will become a multi-disciplinary engineer, developing digital technology solutions for modern luxury vehicles that are renowned for their desirability and performance.?
Manufacturing pathway
Manufacturing is at the very heart of JLR, with thousands ofvehicles being produced every day across our production facilities. With a blend of hands-on experience and qualifications you will work on projects that are fundamental to our global success, providing the opportunity to influence the future of manufacturing.
As part of the Manufacturing pathway, you could be based within any of the following areas: Global Manufacturing Engineering (GME), Engine Propulsion Manufacturing Centre (EPMC), Battery Assembly Centre (BAC), Special Vehicle Operations (VO) Manufacturing, Engineering Operations (EO) or Procurement – Supplier Technical Assistance (STA).
Global Manufacturing Engineering (GME) – Gaydon, Solihull
Our GME team supports the projects and innovation that enables our JLR Reimagine Strategy across our global locations. Join us and you will be responsible for the design, installation and commissioning of manufacturing facilities and processes to build the modern luxury vehicles of the future. You will be working with stakeholders across our enterprise including product engineering, procurement and manufacturing operations to implement new products, processes and equipment whilst driving future technology development.
Dependant on the team you join you could get involved in activities such as working with digital toolsets and systems to leverage VR and digitalisation to bring products and processes to life, work alongside colleagues in the wider industrial operations chapter (procurement, supply chain & manufacturing) as well as interfacing with the product development teams ensuring the product is designed to meet bill of process standards and requirements and deliver enterprise KPI’s on Quality, cost & time to market. Apprentices may also work to provide advice on feasibility for joining technologies, ensuring we deliver a capable process into a production facility. You will learn to develop your expertise in joining to support teams with suitable solutions for equipment as well as joining performance.
If you enjoy problem solving and being at the heart of making things happen then our GME roles give you the opportunity to work throughout the end-to-end product lifecycle, with multiple stakeholders internally and externally, and managing large capital investment change into our plants. Quickly gaining real-world experience in process and industrial engineering, you will play a key role in transforming our brands and develop as a fully rounded automotive manufacturing engineer.
Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre (EPMC) – Wolverhampton
The EPMC is a state of art, purpose-built manufacturing facility producing a range of propulsion systems that form the heart of all our vehicle. It produces both traditional internal combustion engines and new products/ technology such as EDU (Electric Drive Units) & Battery packs, which will support the transition to our electrified future
If you join us on a Degree Apprenticeship programme, you will receive a blend of hands-on experience and qualifications working on projects that are fundamental to our global success. Working in a fast-paced environment, you will be provided with a rich and varied range of activities, both office and shop floor based, including complex problem solving, providing technical expertise and continuous improvement activities.
Battery Assembly Centre (BAC) – Hams Hall
The BAC produces plug in electric vehicle batteries for our Range Rover and Range Rover Sport Hybrid models. It is one of the most innovative and technologically advanced facilities of its kind in the UK, employing next-generation production techniques and manufacturing technologies.
At the BAC, you can get involved with laser welding, manufacturing engineering, materials planning & Logistics (MP&L), quality and the maintenance of some of the latest cutting-edge technologies, with all disciplines being involved with creating automotive battery/ propulsion technologies. You can expect to be working on projects under the supervision of some great team members with masses of experience.
Special Vehicle Operations Manufacturing (Ryton and Fen Ed)
The Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) team is part of our manufacturing and industrial operations function and is responsible for ensuring our bespoke, limited edition and premium products are manufactured to the highest quality standards.
The SVO division is where bespoke craftsmanship, precision and innovation come together to meet the demands of our diverse VIP customers. We are constantly seeking to reach new heights of luxury and performance to create a feeling like no other, and you will become a core member of our team.
You will help us explore the application of new technologies that will enhance performance, capability and luxury personalisation. In the process, you will develop deep understanding of Agile manufacturing methodologies and all aspects of component engineering – giving you everything you need to succeed.
Engineering Operations (EO) – Whitley, Gaydon or Lyons Park
Engineering Operations are at the heart of JLR Engineering. Involved at every stage of the engineering process, they underpin technical innovation and product delivery with programme management, tools and processes and specialist technical services to deliver our world class products. A diverse team, Engineering Operations harness a variety of skill sets, from project management, information management and data analytics, to building and testing prototypes.
You could find yourself working within our Climatic Test Team or Controls Team, where you’ll develop skills such as project management, problem solving communication, embedded control, software design and test facility commissioning. You will be at the forefront of propulsion technologies and accordingly will pick up detailed in depth knowledge of the technologies we are developing and implementing.
Procurement – Supplier Technical Assistance – Gaydon
Procurement is a crucial area of our business, responsible for securing and managing complex global deals with international suppliers and strategic partners. Joining our team as a Procurement apprentice, you’ll support a portfolio of commodities and/ or categories developing strategies, managing relationships, sourcing new products, analysing market trends, negotiating new and existing contracts and supporting procurement’s transformation as part of JLR’s Reimagine strategy.
You could find yourself supporting any of the following areas: Exterior, Interior, Chassis, Software and Digital, Electrical Hardware, e-Propulsion, Engines and Driveline, Aftermarket, Indirect, Raw Materials and Special Vehicles.
You will be based in a combination of manufacturing, supplier, and office-based placements which will help you improve your core problem solving and manufacturing skills. The variety of placements available in STA will mean you are able to interact with all functions throughout the business as well as spending time off site at our key suppliers, helping to improve processes and working as a team to prevent and resolve quality concerns.
Your Education Provider
As part of your Apprenticeship, you will study for a BEng in Applied Professional Engineering with the University of Warwick (WMG).
Over the first three years of your Apprenticeship, you will study a range of modules designed to help you develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to thrive as an engineering professional. A network of apprentice tutors and line managers will regularly review your progress and offer advice to support you in performing at your best.
These modules are taught in blocks throughout the academic year by Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), a key part of the University of Warwick. You will benefit from a mix of lectures, practical laboratory assignments, seminars and tutorials delivered in person and online, and enjoy access to a virtual learning environment for further support.
In your final year, you will undertake a work-based project that also forms part of your End Point Assessment (EPA). On successful completion of your EPA, you will achieve your Level 6 Apprenticeship, ready for an amazing career with JLR.
